The Con is ON!

It's May and that means its Comic con season! (sort of) I'm going to have tables at Bristol Comic Expo on the 12th and 13th of May and at London Comic Con MCM Expo from the 25th to the 27th of May. I'm going to have art prints and copies of my comic book "Now We Are Running..." for sale and I'll be sketching too if anyone is interested in a J.Stayte original. If that wasn't enough I'll be sharing my table with comic artist extraordinaire Mark Pearce! Mark is the writer and artist of excellent sci-fi space-explosion-robot-awesome-comedy "Ronin Dogs". Both issues are going to be available (he is working on issue 3 as we speak). Mark will also come baring the gift of wicked-rad prints. And if both of them two things wasn't enough we'll be within spitting distance (and yes, we plan to spit) of Uber-genius artist Jess Bradley, who'll be bringing her full range of Squid Bits badassery, including three new books! You might even get to spot the fabled John Paul Bove appearing in the open like some kind of Transformer colouring mythical creature! So come and look upon our wonders and despair, or just say hello, whichever you would prefer...

Dean dong! I am proud to announce that I'll be taking part in Pixel Drip Gallery's "Six Seasons and a Movie" art show. The show will be taking place in L.A around the time of the show's season 3 finale and features some AMAZING artists (including my fellow Jurassic Dork, Jess Bradley). National Lampoon's Vacation and Christmas Vacation are cherished movies in the Stayte household (not European Vacation, its an awful, sweaty film) so for the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the 80's show I fought for the chance to draw one of my heroes; Clark Wilhelm Griswold Jr (as played by Chevy Chase).

Monkey Man Is 25!

Bust out your finest carbonated fizz-wines and your chocolate swans because Monkey Man is celebrating 25 gut-burstingly hilarious strips! Check out this month's bumper crop of chuckle-swollen silly-pictures: In strip 22, Monkey Man sees your Marvel's Avengers Assemble and raises you 4 more unnecessarily over-explained movie re-titled for them wacky Brits. In strip 23, 'Community's Alison Brie damns the world to an alien apocalypse. In strip 24, Monkey Man meets the WORST supporting character ever and in strip 25, we look at which came first, the dudes or the Doctor? O is for Omni Consumer Products. Another piece from last year's Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the Eighties art show, drawn by me and coloured by the incomparable John-Paul Bove. We designed this poster to look like something that would have been pasted up on a wall around Old Detroit, warning kids not to commit any dystopian monkey-shines, lest they face the wrath of Officer Alex Murphy...

W is for Wyld Stallyns! Another piece for the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the 80's show. It's weird that we never got to hear Bill and Ted perform any of their songs, yet we know that they unite they world in peace and harmony, so they were probably quite good.

Monkey Man versus George Lucas!

Monkey Man is back, 2012 style! In episode 17 Monkey Man and his friends, Geek and Nigel 7 take a trip to the cinema to see Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace in 3D but their reaction doesn't go down too well with George Lucas and episode 18 deals with the colossal fallout! (Not yet) Super Mario.

Another of my pieces for last December's Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the eighties art show. I tried to find a new way of depicting Mario for this picture, since the internet is full of amazing artistic interpretations of him and his dungarees and hat and moustache. Looking at the original Super Mario Bros. game I realised that before he eats a power mushroom he basically looks like a baby with a big bushy 'tache. And so....

Peter & Gwen.

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy from The Amazing Spider-Man movie. Firstly, yes I AM aware of how large and Jean Ralphio-esque Peter's hair is in this picture. As a life-long Spider-Man fan I'm looking forward to the new movie and due to the talented people involved I'm confident that its going to be great (note: must remember to change this post when it turns out to be rubbish). Unlike a lot of people online I also really like the new costume and discovered that its really fun to draw. So all my hopes lie in the hands of a giant CG Lizard-man (as always).

Bath Uni ICIA Comics and Illustration classes for February!

Introduction to Comic Book Art and Introduction to Illustration courses at Bath University ICIA are now open for booking. Both start on the 15th of February and run for 10 weeks. This will be the 3rd time I've ran the courses and they've been really successful and a lot of fun. The centre piece of the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the 80's show. Each of us involved in the exhibition contributed to the Labyrinth poster. I drew Sarah and Ludo, Dylan Cook drew Hoggle, Jess Bradley drew Sir Didymus and his loyal steed Ambrocious, Mark Pearce took on Jareth and his MIGHTY package and John-Paul Bove coloured it all with his most magical of magic brushes. A mash-up worthy of some kind of Goblin dance party.

There's a word for people in our situation: Ghosts.

B is for Beetlejuice! As seen in the Jurassic Dorks A-Z of the Eighties art show held in December. This was a fun piece to do. Betelgeuse in the background is water colour and the rest is coloured in photoshop. I originally drew the staircase very straight and correct, with a ruler and that, but it just looked too neat so I went back and re-did it, making it wonky and Burton-esque. The Maitlands were a last minute addition too, but I'm glad I added them as they're one of my favorite things I've drawn in ages. I'll post more stuff from the art show soon!

Happy January to you all! This is a replacement dvd cover I made for my brother's Christmas present. I got him classic cult comedy WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER, a not-particularly well known but incredibly funny film by David Wain (Role Models). Unfortunately the dvd sleeve that came with it could only be described as "Done on 1996 era photoshop software, by a drunk person, in 10 minutes, during an earthquake. Also the person was blind." and so I used my artistic skills (my only skill) to create a custom sleeve. I'm tempted to do this for more movies as I've just seen the Terminator blu-ray sleeve and its explosively boring...

Jurassic Dorks Art Show: The Pictures!

The Jurassic Dorks art show has finished! Thank you so much to everyone who came and checked out all our work, it was a great week talking geeky stuff with people and we will definitely do it again in the new year. And if you missed the show but still want a sweet slice of the action the you could order one of the art books! It's an epic 32 page, A4, full colour tome signed by all the artists.
